Children's Dentistry with a difference!

We love to see children shortly after their first teeth erupt. On their first visit, will be able to provide them with a comfortable, positive experience to help desensitise them to what could be a scary environment and experience. We aim to provide a relaxed atmosphere and the friendliest experience so that they never develop fears and anxiety about dental care which is a common reason why adults may put off going to the dentist.

During this visit, we will do a thorough examination of your child’s teeth, gums, jaws and mouth, checking for any signals of tooth decay or other oral health problems. We will be able to advise you on how you can help look after their teeth and prevent decay. X-rays may be taken in order to check for hidden decay and to examine the child’s facial bones and developing teeth. We may then clean the teeth, depending on your child’s development. We will also discuss with you any oral health habits, such as thumb-sucking or teeth grinding.

What is the difference between adult dentistry and children's dentisty?

Children are the most at risk of experiencing cavities and tooth decay. But more importantly, kids are often quite nervous and afraid of the dentist so a team that can build great rapport with the child and make them feel comfortable is incredibly important.

At Optimum Dental, Dr Karu's calm and friendly demeanour, in addition to Sharon and Chrystal's ability to make all patients feel comfortable, makes our team fantastic with the younger patients! We work hard to make the little ones feel at home at our practice and make it a fun experience for your child.

Why should we care about my child's baby teeth?

This is a common thing we hear and to an extent, it can be true. For example, if your child has a minor cavity and we know that their permanent teeth are not far away, we will often suggest that no action is taken. However, there are many cases where it is critical that your dentist intervene. This may include:

  • Cavities and tooth decay: If your child has cavities or tooth decay, it is important to have it fixed and a dental filling put in place to ensure that the tooth decay does not progress. Even if your child is not experiencing pain, it is important that their teeth remain healthy before their adult teeth come through.

  • Aches and pains: Usually caused by tooth decay but often from other issues, it is important that we resolve this as it can be severely painful and cause future problems. Regular check-ups, cleans and early intervention can ensure that your child does not have to deal with any painful procedures.

  • Premature tooth loss: If your child loses a baby tooth prematurely (that is before their permanent teeth are ready to erupt), this can cause teeth to shift and crowding of the underlying adult teeth may occur. That can cause their adult teeth to erupt crooked which may be costly in the future. This can occur from an accident such as a fall or sporting injury, or from tooth decay.

There are many, many reasons to look after your children's teeth and have your child see their dentist regularly. Ensuring their adult teeth erupt nice and straight, reduce the potential of requiring braces and keeping your child pain-free is important!

Braces for kids

Are you worried about the alignment of your child’s teeth? Crooked teeth in children and adolescents is not uncommon. It is recommended that every child should have an orthodontic assessment at the first recognition of an orthodontic problem or no later than the age of 7. At this stage, your child will have a mix of baby and permanent ‘adult’ teeth.

This stage in their development is ideal to identify if an orthodontic problem is developing. If you wait for all the permanent teeth to come through before seeking a professional opinion, it could make the correction of the problem more difficult, since the face and jaws have almost completed their growth.

Optimum Dental can help identify any issues that are developing and can discuss with you what the best early treatment modality is for your child. Early treatment aims to create a better environment for the adult teeth to come through. This may sometimes involve the use of orthodontic appliances or exercises to improve tongue posture or swallowing patterns. If your child’s palate is too narrow, an expander may be used to widen the jaw.
