Invisalign Epping Dental Clinic

During your first consultation at Optimum Dental, we will make sure Invisalign is the right choice for you and discuss any potential alternatives including metal braces, ceramic braces or dental veneers. During this process, we will take the necessary x-rays, digital photos, impressions, and a ‘bite record’ of your teeth. These will help us evaluate your suitability for Invisalign and put together a 3D representation of your teeth. We will then use the latest imaging technology to work out how to move your teeth so we can create your desired alignment.

The intraoral digital scanners used to create the 3D image of your teeth can quickly and cleanly scan your mouth to assist us in working out your treatment requirements. This technology gives us in-depth information on how much your teeth need to move to achieve your optimum smile. The great thing about Invisalign is that you can preview your projected smile and see upfront what your teeth are expected to look like during, and by the end of your treatment with a software generated virtual treatment plan. The digital treatment plan will show a series of movements your teeth will go through over the course of the treatment.

With Invisalign, the movement of teeth is done in stages, so any amount from 6 to 50 aligners may be required to achieve the best results. When you come in for your appointment, we will show you a digital representation of your treatment plan. It will show you visually of how teeth are going to move during each stage of your realignment.

Follow up appointments will be needed to adjust your aligners every 6 to 8 weeks. This ensures your aligners are doing the correct job and we can closely monitor your treatment each step of the way.

Most Invisalign patients will complete their treatment in a period of 9 to 15 months. Every person’s orthodontic needs are different, so be sure to schedule a consultation with Dr Karu to determine what length of treatment will be necessary. Once your treatment plan is completed, you will only need to visit our office every 6 to 8 weeks for a short progress check and delivery of your next 3 or 4 alignment tray sets. By correcting your smile with Invisalign, you can not only expect an aesthetically pleasing smile and greater confidence, but also a positive enhancement of your oral health. If you’re ready to transform your smile, make an appointment today to discuss Invisalign.

Can I get Invisalign?

Clear aligners or ‘invisible braces’ such as Invisalign is the latest technology in orthodontics. They are a modern alternative option to traditional braces for orthodontic treatment. Similarly to traditional braces, Invisalign can deliver desired results with a beautiful smile, perfectly aligned teeth and good functional bite. Invisalign is especially popular due to its virtual invisibility.

At Optimum Dental, we offer a comprehensive range of dental services including orthodontic treatments such as Invisalign, traditional metal braces and ceramic braces. Invisalign is suitable for most orthodontic treatments, but it does have it's limitations, meaning there are circumstances where we will recommend traditional metal braces instead. Learn more about each option with us and let us help you determine the right option for you when you visit our Epping dental clinic!

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a series of custom trays that are made of a clear material that is worn over a period of time to help correct and realign your teeth. They are virtually invisible and are typically more comfortable to wear than traditional metal braces.

Invisalign is made from a patented thermoplastic material and advanced digital technology are used to make custom, clear, removable trays. Invisalign uses digital models of your teeth and the knowledge of your dentist to devise a safe and effective way to correct poorly aligned teeth. Each aligner is custom manufactured to perfectly fit your teeth and your teeth only.

Factoring in an individual’s case, a patient will typically need to change to a new set of custom aligners roughly every 2 weeks. Your dentist Dr Karu will provide you with multiple sets of aligners at a time, the frequency of your visits is only once every 6 to 8 weeks. Your teeth are gradually moved into alignment by these aligners and this process is overseen by your dentist until your teeth are the desired position. Patients are required to wear their aligners at all times except when eating, brushing and flossing. Patients are expected to wear each aligner continuously for a at least of 20 to 22 hours of wear daily. As you replace each aligner, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week – until they have straightened and re-positioned into the final position agreed by you and your dentist.

Aligners are made to be removable which is beneficial in terms of cleaning accessibility and maintaining good oral hygiene. They can be replaced every fortnight or at set intervals in order to gradually guide your teeth in the direction planned by the orthodontist. The new set of trays will be slightly altered from the last which allows the aligners to slowly move your teeth into the desirable position and ultimately straighten them. The result is straight teeth, fast, and without braces.

Treatment plans will vary based on your situation, but most people are in treatment from one to three years. Invisalign is often more costly than traditional braces and may not be suitable for your personal circumstances.

What teeth misalignments can Invisalign help treat?

Invisalign can be used to correct the following bite and misalignment issues:

  • Overcrowded teeth: If you have overcrowded teeth, there is simply not enough room for all your teeth to fit comfortably and normally in your jaw. When left untreated, overly-crowded teeth presents with an increased risk of gum disease, as your teeth are harder to clean and their normal function can be interfered with.

  • Widely spaced teeth or gap teeth: On the contrary to overcrowded teeth, if you have widely spaced teeth, you have extra space in your jaw. This could be due to small-sized teeth, abnormal jaw bone growth, genetic factors, missing teeth and/or tongue protrusion. When teeth are missing or gappy, problems can arise if the other teeth shift due to the extra space. Spacing issues can also lead to some periodontal diseases including Gingivitis and Periodontist, which, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss.

  • Crossbite: This condition occurs when your upper and lower jaws are both misaligned. It usually causes one or more upper teeth to bite on the inside of the lower teeth, but the bite can also happen on both the front and/or sides of the mouth. A crossbite can cause wear of the teeth, gum disease and bone loss.

  • Overbite: Overbite occurs if your upper teeth significantly overlap your lower teeth. This is typically caused by either genetic factors, bad oral habits, or over development of the bone that supports the teeth. An overbite can lead to gum problems or irritation, and/or wear on the lower teeth. It can lead to painful jaw and join problems.

  • Underbite: When you have an underbite, your lower teeth protrude past the upper teeth. This is usually caused by undergrowth of the upper jaw, overgrowth of the lower jaw, or both. An underbite can also be caused by missing upper teeth which prevents the normal function of the front teeth or molars and can lead to tooth wear. It can also cause painful jaw and join problems.

What are my alternatives to Invisalign?

Depending on your circumstances, there may be alternative options that may not be immediately obvious and a thorough assessment by our friendly team will be able to uncover other options!

Some great alternatives to Invisalign include:

  • Traditional Braces: Traditional braces can be more appropriate in some circumstances and is a great alternative to Invisalign. When opting for tradition braces over Invisalign, you can choose to have them in many different colours for more flare or choose ceramic braces for a less visible look.

  • Dental Veneers: If you are looking to resolve a minor tooth gap, dental veneers or dental bonding may be a great alternative. This would depend on the gap and the location and careful consideration will need to be taken to ensure it is the right choice.
